World Food Day

October 16th 2014 is world food day. On this day "people around the world come together to declare their commitment to create a world free from hunger and malnutrition. Because when it comes to hunger, the only acceptable number is zero." This year's theme is "Family Farming: Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth". This year they challenge you to toast the farmers of the world by posting a picture of yourself with your glass raised and include a personalized toast as your status or tweet on Facebook or Twitter with #ToastAFarmer, #WFD2014.
You could also share any of the photos below of real family farmers with a personalized toast with #ToastAFarmer, #WFD2014.

Final Report

As you may know the Youth Volunteers in Action Project was started as my Gold Award project for Girl Scouts. Today I sent in my final report to the Council, along with numerous links and documents about the project. I should hear back soon about whether my project was approved or not. Thank you all for those who participated and assisted me in this project. I could not have completed the project without the help of many individuals and organizations.

ECOS

"Engineers for Community Service (ECOS) was founded in 2004 by a group of undergraduates in an engineering ethics course at Ohio State.  The organization took on its first international project, MontaƱa de Luz, in 2005 and went on to win the Spirit of Ohio State Award that very same year.  Since its creation, ECOS has gone on to win several more awards and has expanded to include both local and international projects."
"ECOS promotes life-long professionalism via educational experiences in the uses of engineering skills for local and international community service projects. We value both extra-curricular volunteerism and curricular approaches such as service-learning and recognize some fundamental philosophical tension between these approaches."
ECOS, or Engineers for community service, is a service organization founded by Ohio State University students. They do a variety pf local and international service projects. Check out their website through this link.

Looking forward to growing our potential through youth action

Before we post our first blog entry on YOUTH VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION, we'd like to thank JJ Roberts and her team for pulling us all together and increasing our community potentials by empowering youth.  We look forward to sharing volunteer opportunities and the impact of youth action on our ability to serve the community.  Here's to a rich partnership!  Monday, September 15, 2014. This week's opportunities to volunteer at the Pomerene Center
FOR YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Sunday, September 21, 2014, 3:30 pm.
This could grow into a more regular volunteer position with training opportunities.
WE'VE PROMISED a photo op to all LEGO challengers at the close of LEGO Challenge–creativity 101, Sunday, September 21, 2014, 3:30 pm. Our in-house photographer will be away visiting her mother so we're looking for a volunteer.
HOW TO VOLUNTEER: call or text Anne Cornell at 740.502.5109 or email pomerenearts@gmail.com for information.  We'll want to see 3 photos you've taken and are proud of.

FOR YOUNG MARKETERS:
At your earliest convenience
Small, simple efforts can have a big impact.  We're looking for volunteers to help us reach a broader audience.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND on our current situation: Tony Bible is an incredible artist and teacher. He is currently leading a LEGO workshop at the Pomerene Center for the Arts.  We could have accommodated 8 more children and adults in the LEGO CHALLENGE-creativity 101 workshop.

HERE'S WHAT'S GOING ON in the class: September 14th - everyone is experimenting through a series of build-it-up/tear-it-down challenges designed to encourage creative and technical development. September 21st, everyone will work to create designs and turn them into finished LEGO pieces with Tony on hand to help problem solve.

WE NEED HELP figuring out what we can do better so that more folks can be involved.  When you see these kids working you know it's just too great to miss!
HOW TO VOLUNTEER:
  1. If you have a Facebook account, check with your governing adult i.e. parent/grand parent/guardian to make sure it's ok to do the following:
    • Click on this link, take the survey
    • Share it on your timeline and encourage your friends to do the same.  With your help we will reach a broader audience
    • Like the Pomerene Center for the Arts and post on our timeline to let the world know that as a YOUTH VOLUNTEER IN ACTION, you have taken a volunteer action
  2. If you don't have a Facebook account call or text Anne Cornell at 740.502.5109 or email pomerenearts@gmail.com for information on how else you can help us get the word out anddo things better so that more folks can be involved.
The Pomerene Center for the Arts works to keep life interesting in Coshocton County through creativity and arts innovation.

Conservation project

Jessica E. a Silver Venturer from Crew 447 ran a conservation project on Sept. 13 as part of her Ranger Award. She and a group of volunteers cut down invasive grapevines that were killing the trees along the Kokosing bike trail. Taking down the grapevines helped to keep the condition of the trail excellent for future generations.

If you would like to do a similar project please look at the following resources:
Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Buckeye Trail Association
